Vines of different kind take over in Coonawarrra

VIBRANT colours, juicy fruit and flavour explosions are what judges will look for in this year’s annual tomato growing competition.

The Summer Tomato Growing Competition encourages all backyard vegetable growers to take action by raising a tomato plant while supporting the Coonawarra Community Club.

Last year’s winner Peter Weinberg has a firm grip on the William Wilson Perpetual Trophy and hopes to continue his winning streak this year.

Entry is $20 per person with all proceeds set for the Coonawarra Community Club.

Entry forms can be collected from the Coonawarra Community Club, Plant Earth Nursery, Meek’s Butcher or the Coonawarra Store.

Judges will make their decision on February 16.

Organiser Maria Weinberg encouraged people of all ages to get involved.

“We want to find the district’s best tomato grower while raising some money for the local Coonawarra Community Club,” she said.

“But it’s not just about being the best, it is about learning, discovering, sharing tricks and secrets, as we all strive for better and more bountiful and flavoursome home grown tomatoes.

“Give your tomato plants some extra special attention this summer, happy gardening.”
