FRIDAY night saw the Mount Gambier and District Tennis Association Round 9 A1 match-ups declared as draws, after the games were called short due to a washout.

However, the other senior grades continued as normal on Saturday, with the B1 competition seeing Moorak Green now on top of the ladder by a fraction of a point.

While Moorak’s Green team claimed a win over Mil Lel, the previously first-placed West Gambier went down to the Suttontown Tigers on its home courts.

Moorak dominated the day to finish with an eight-set win over the visiting Mil Lel side.

The host’s Chris Tully and Trevor Pettingill both won their singles easily, while Brett Gordon suffered a loss to Mil Lel’s CJ Arnold.

For the women, Moorak put on a dominant display, with Tarrah Taylor, Marilyn Gordon and Janita Galloway each winning their games by convincing margins.

It was a similar story for the doubles, with Mil Lel’s Craig Baker and Marcus Fitzgerald accounting for Tully and Pettingill with a score of 6-3 for the guest’s second win for the day.

The next closest match saw Pettingill and Brett Gordon defeat Fitzgerald and Arnold 6-3, while the rest of the doubles were well in favour of Moorak.

Hosting the fourth-placed Suttontown Tigers, West had a one-win lead on the premiership ladder before the round.

However, the Tigers proved to be formidable opponents, as they claimed a six-set win over the ex-ladder-leaders.

West’s Craig Ward was the only victor for his team in the men’s singles, as he accounted for the Tigers’ Christian McCombe 6-2.

Suttontown’s Tom Inglis and Daniel Smith both performed well in their games, to defeat Rylan Ward and Mitchell Duryen respectively.

For the women, Suttontown continued to show its strength, as Casey Sampson and Aimee McLaughlin both won their games 6-1 against Charli Hockey and Tess Kensley respectively.

It was a closer game between West’s Jessica Stutley and Suttontown’s Molly Lennon, but the latter prevailed with a final score of 6-4.

In the doubles it was a mixed bag of results.

West’s Craig and Rylan Ward won their game 6-0, while Craig Ward also teamed up with Duryen for a 6-4 victory.

However, with the remaining doubles matches going the way of the visitors, the Tigers took home the points.

In the other games of the round, Uniting Church claimed a close two-set win over Centrals Grey.

The men’s singles saw Central’s Nathan Schubert defeat Travis Crowe 6-3, while Sean Harrison added to Centrals’ set count with a narrow 7-6 win over Ian Sanderson.

Tom Telfer was the only success for the Uniting Church men, with a convincing 6-0 triumph over Mitchell Vanriet.

For the women it was another mixed bag, with Uniting Church winning two of the three games through Halaena Hogg and Frances Quirk, while Meagan Jones held strong for Centrals with a 6-2 win over Sue Murray.

This saw the set count level going into the doubles games, but it was Uniting Church which won four of the six matches to take out the honours.

Another close game was had between the Suttontown Crows and Moorak Gold.

In the end it was the Crows who come away with a two-set victory.

Moorak’s Ryan Horrigan and Sophie Johnson were the only victors for their team in the singles matches, with the other four games going the way of Suttontown.

In the doubles, Suttontwon held firm to win three of the six matches and walk away with the premiership points.

The final scheduled game saw Centrals Orange forfeit to give the third-placed Mount Gambier an easy win.
