Archery: Freeman fires on target

BUSY WEEKEND FOR ARCHERS: Sunny and calm weather was just the ticket for the Blue Lake Archers Sunday afternoon at Corriedale Park.

BUSY was the word for the Blue Lake Archers over the weekend with a double indoor round, a working bee and an outdoor event rounding out their activities.

Friday night saw a twin indoor round of Australian 18 metre events.

Round one produced an excellent score for Phil Tremelling using his recurve bow against the more accurate compound bows of his rivals.

Fortunately for the other three archers, Tremelling is yet to qualify for an indoor handicap rating and could only card an off-the-bow score.

Paul Freeman made sure his handicap rating counted, winning by a tidy 12 points over Garry Jacques.

The second round of the night had the archers warmed up and the accuracy ramped up accordingly.

Freeman pushed his performance up a level and was rewarded with his first indoor All Gold Medal as he stormed into an unassailable 29 point lead.

Jacques looked to have the wood on Kilsby again but the pair ended the night in a tie break to settle the runner up as they both finished on 292 points apiece, Kilsby gaining the nod for second place.

Sunday’s outdoor Melbourne round was preceded by a working bee to start preparing the field area and equipment ready for next month’s tournament.

The sunny and relatively calm conditions and the leisurely 90 arrow outdoor round were just the ticket after a busy morning.

The round produced a closer finish than expected with good performances noted from the seven archers scoring the event.

Liam Stevens finished his day only five points from matching his best for the round.

Ian Perry was cooking up a storm with his most accurate round for some time that put him firmly in the mix to challenge for top spot.

A trio separated by nine points vied for the day’s win.

Len Bayley finally gained his revenge over Freeman who had topped the charts for several weeks, a gap of seven points seeing Freeman in the runner up position behind Bayley.

Two points divided second from third as Perry came tantalizingly close to pipping the recently almost unstoppable pair of Bayley and Freeman.
