MGGC: Christmas theme for women’s stableford

HAMS ALL ROUND: Carol Smith, Bernie Jennings and Lyn Hudson enjoyed their hams after claiming the honours in their respective grades at the Mount Gambier Golf Club last week.

WEDNESDAY’S stableford competition at the Mount Gambier Golf Club saw a distinctly Christmas theme added to the usual format.

All winners took home a half leg of ham donated by the club and the runners-up received Ferraro chocolates.

With 38 players in the field, the event was run in three divisions, with scores of 40 and 41 being posted in each grade.

In A Grade Bernie Jennings continued her winning streak with 41 points ahead of Faye Mainwaring on 37.

Not to be outdone, Carol Smith also posted 41 points to claim B Grade from club captain Heather Barry on 38.

Lyn Hudson added to her latest victories in C Grade with a creditable 40 points to edge out Donna Jennings on 38.

Players required 36 points or better to claim a ball, with winners including Barry, Donna Jennings, Mainwaring, Camilla Knowles, Maureen Sims and Linley Gray.

The pro-shot on the eighth green from Carol Smith caused some excitement in her group, as it missed holing out by mere centimetres.

The novelty event in the three grades was for the best third shot on the par five 17th hole and these were won by Sue Coulter, Barry and Hudson respectively.

Last Tuesday a presentation dinner was held for all club women members who participated in the Saturday series of competitions throughout 2017.

All four annual events were keenly contested and have been a special incentive and source of interest for these players.

The ever-consistent Heather Chapman narrowly claimed the weekly points competition by amassing 23 points, to edge out Lois Harvey on 22, while the prestigious eclectic competition was won by Di O’Donnell, with only a half-shot advantage over dual runners-up Sue Coulter and Faye Mainwaring.

The Hudson/O’Donnell trophy, donated for the best three Monthly Medal rounds of the year, was awarded to Mainwaring, who accounted for Betty McKechnie.

The corresponding Monthly Medal putting competition was also awarded to Mainwaring.

These competitions will resume in March next year, after the opening day of the women’s winter calendar.
