Division 1

Mount Gambier RSL Red 71/14 d Naracoorte 60/2

MOUNT Gambier RSL Red maintained its position at the top of the Division 1 ladder with a solid performance at home against Naracoorte.

Robert Corner, Deane Wilkinson, Chris Waugh and Andy Ashby took control through the middle section of their game, denying Dave Parker, Rob Kirkland, Jeff East and Ron Garton any advancement for 10 ends.

While Garton’s team won four of the closing ends to improve its card, Ashby’s four comfortably won with a score of 28-17.

Jamie Lambert, Ralph Stafford, Michael Fox and Graham Ellis had a tight battle against Mark Treglown, Rob Selig, Malcolm Johnson and Graham East.

After a good scoring run, they dropped six on the 14th end to see the score on 15-all.

However, Ellis’ rink recovered and pulled ahead by 10 shots, which proved sufficient to hold out Naracoorte’s final charge and saw a 26-22 win for the hosts.

John Schroder, Peter Roachock, Neil Tobin and Rex Heins played Dean Williams, Richard Jones, Tom Williams and Colin Munn.

Heins’ team stalled through the middle section before a six on the 22nd end propelled them forward.

They managed to draw level with one end to play and finished just down, 20-21.

THE Mount Gambier RSL Blue team claimed a valuable win against Port MacDonnell to keep within striking distance of the top four sides.

The rink of Gary Bowering, Fiona Pearson, Greg Whitehead and Ron Ploenges out-bowled Wally Tarca, Judy Grosvenor, David Gould and Chris Richards in the first half to take the lead by up to 12 shots.

The momentum swung Port MacDonnell’s way after the break and Richards’ team scored in multiples on five ends to lead 25-21 by the 20th end.

However, the RSL four again took control and finished the game off, 29-27.

Tim Wrightson, Ian MacIntosh, Gary Feast and Strawb Masters had the ascendancy throughout over Barb Milstead, Peter Bruhn, Heather Richards and Adam Wilson.

Claiming 15 of the 25 ends, they won comfortably 28-14.

It was not such a result for Dougie McPhail, David Edwards, Glenn Wright and Ben Masters, as they took to the green against Greg Fisher, Joy Bilney, Bill Richards and Marcus Pietersma.

Restricted to mostly singles and unable to apply scoring pressure, the RSL side went down 16-25.

Division 2

Naracoorte 84/14 d Mount Gambier RSL Red 53/2

HAVING beaten Naracoorte convincingly in Round 1, Mount Gambier RSL Division 2 Red travelled to Naracoorte with high hopes.

However, the guests struggled to adjust to the slower greens and lost by a total of 31 shots, wining on one rink for the day.

Ian Colbey, David Anderson, Bob Milligan and Noel Miller were off to a poor start and struggled all game against Terry Mahney’s team.

The final margin saw a 15-31 defeat for the RSL.

It was also a tough day for Simon Attiwill, Gary Fox, Ron Edlington and Wayne Legutko, who won only eight ends against David Jones’ four, as they went down 13-29.

The only victory for the visitors came from a tight contest, with Craig Pearson, Graham Smith, Graham Dent and Ian Moulden coming from behind to finish one up against David Bennett’s four, 25-24.

THE Division 2 Blue team could not match the form of Robe when it visited the seaside greens on Saturday.

Carmel McQuade, Nancye Wilson, Maryke Heaver and David O’Donnell were the best performers on the day, with a strong second half seeing them defeat Harold Manton’s team 29-22.

On the neighbouring rink, John Robinson, Jim Cruise, Malcolm Williamson and John Spehr were travelling well before a series of losing ends cost them the points against Errol Jennings’ team for an eventual 21-22 loss.

Unfortunately, John Forster, Graham Wilson, Rick Fallaize and Karen Doman were down 0-15 on the seventh end before they could find their form against Ken Smith’s four.

From there they played an even game, but the damage had been done, with the RSL going down 14-30.
