JUNIOR cricketers from across the Limestone Coast enjoyed a recent trial game before next year’s Under 12 Country Cup held at the Barossa Valley from January 8.

Teams from the Lower and Upper South East enjoyed the day in good spirits at Marist Park, with a squad then chosen for next year’s championships.

South East country cricket coordinator Brendan Murphy said the day was a great opportunity to see what the region had to offer in up-and-coming cricketers.

“It was a great opportunity for the Lower and Upper South East kids to come together and have a trial match,” he said.

“Out of the day we selected 12 players to represent the South East Under 12s at the Country Cup.

“It was a well-participated day, played in good spirits and everyone had a good opportunity to show their skills.”

Kingston’s Craig Watson took on the coaching duties for the Upper South East team, while Adam Kuhl coached the Lower South East team.

“They did a fantastic job with the kids,” Murphy said.

“We had cricketers coming from Bordertown, Kingston, all over the South East involved.

“The squad we picked will be coached by Sam Willis, with Adam Kuhl as team manager.”

Murphy said the Country Championships provided the young cricketers with a good opportunity to experience the sport at the next level against other top talent in Australia.

He said it was good to see previous representatives in Willis and Kuhl return to put something back into the sport.

“It is fantastic to see them involved and being really good role models for our Under 12 kids,” he said.

The squad to represent the region will be announced in due time.
