Golfers brave conditions for fundraiser

FOR A CAUSE: Winners of the Beachport Golf Club’s multiplication stableford competition Marilyn Bellinger (left) and Shirley Brown (right) are joined by convener of the day Liz Redman at the cancer fundraiser event last week.

AFTER the previous week’s visit to Millicent cancelled due to rain, 15 women from the Beachport Golf Club braved the hot weather last week to compete in a multiplication stableford event to raise funds for cancer.

Due to the heat, only nine holes were played on the day.

The winners for the event were Marilyn Bellinger and Shirley Brown, who combined well to edge out Janet McArthur and Marie Pegler on a countback after both pairs finished with 30 points.

Bellinger and Brown won a voucher donated by Liz Redman.

Other prizes saw the straight tee shot won by Marie Pegler, while a consolation ball went to Suzie Watts.

Vickie Snodgrass won a voucher for her shot nearest to the windmill on the seventh with a ball going to Janet McArthur.

Following lunch, a trading table auction was held.

The proceeds of this as well as a raffle, donated by Annemarie Goode and Liz Redman, saw $475 donated to Lyndal Redman’s head shave for The Many Faces of Cancer.

This followed a previous donation to Redman of $300 and helped push her total raised to over $10,000.

The money raised will be used to benefit country cancer patients via the lodges in Adelaide.

In other events, the men have thrown down some impressive scores in the Sunday competitions of late.

Brian Amos won the event played on November 12 with 44 points, followed by new player Rob Carter on 40 and Lyall MacGregor on 38.

Peter Buckley was the nearest-the-pin winner.

John Wakelin amassed an impressive 45 points to win on November 19 and Brian Amos will have to have dropped his handicap being the runner up on 40, with Lyall and Justin MacGregor, Lance

Chambers and Wally Altschwager all tying for third on 36.

The most recent event saw Ginge Chambers claim the honours on November 26 with a nett 65, while Brian Amos followed suit with 66 and Jason Walters rounded out the podium with 67.

Nearest-the-pin was won by Rob Carter.
