Bowls: Rink domination delivers win

Division 1

Mount Gambier Red 72/12 d Mount Gambier RSL Blue 68/4

MOUNT Gambier Bowls Club’s Division 1 Red team travelled across town to play Mount Gambier RSL Blue on Saturday.

The Round 9 Open Pennant clash saw the guests the victors at the end of the day, despite only winning on one rink.

In tricky conditions, Bec Gruar, Terry Bruhn, Brad Errock and skipper Tony Renzi led all day to win 27-18 over Glenn Wright’s team.

This was enough to get the Red team across the line for the win, as Tony Bowditch’s four were in front at the break, but went down by one shot to Strawb Masters and his side, 22-23.

Greg Carpenter and his rink was behind all day, before drawing level on the 23rd end, only to drop a five and go down 23-27 to Ron Ploenges’ four.

Naracoorte 80/16 d Mount Gambier Blue 54/0

DIVISION 1 Blue was no match for its third-placed opponent Naracoorte on Saturday, as it lost on all three rinks.

Ian VonStanke and his four went down to Ron Garton 19-29, while Jeff England’s team struggled against Ian Williams to go down 15-27.

The closest game for the day saw David Babb and his rink lose to Graham East by just four shots, but it could not prevent the eventual 20-24 defeat.

Division 2

Mount Gambier RSL Blue 79/16 d Mount Gambier 48/0

MOUNT Gambier’s Division 2 side suffered an easy defeat at the hands of a visiting Mount Gambier RSL Blue team on Saturday.

Losing on all three rinks, the hosts were unable to match the power of the guests and remain on the bottom of the premiership ladder.

Division 3

Kingston 69/12 d Mount Gambier 67/4

DIVISION 3 travelled to Kingston and in a tight game went down by only two shots.

John Kentish and Margaret Marshall’s teams were able to come home with wins on their rinks, but George Kuhl’s four got beaten, seeing Kingston with the shots it needed to win the day.

Division 4

Mount Gambier 94/16 d Penola 52/0

IN Division 4 Mount Gambier enjoyed a comfortable win on its home greens against Penola.

Jane Callega, Athol Malseed and Kevin McGrath and their teams each won their rinks to see a convincing margin by the day’s end.
