Williams ready to glove up

THIRD TIME LUCKY: Mount Gambier’s Amy Williams will give her all when she takes to the ring for her third career fight on Saturday at the ‘War in the Bool 2’ boxing event, as she looks to secure her first win.

MOUNT Gambier boxer Amy Williams is ready to enter the ring for the third fight of her career in the ‘War in the Bool 2′ competition at the Warrnambool Stadium this Saturday.

Up against Kylie Clark, who will be fighting in her first bout, Williams is confident she has what it takes to add a victory to her belt.

Her fight will join the more than 20 other amateur fights in the event, which will be an opener for the pro fights later in the night.

After losing her previous two contests which were fought in Adelaide, Williams is determined to once again show her skills in the ring.

“I think I am lucky (this time), I have a first fighter, but I’m not going to underestimate her,” she said.

“She’s with (trainer) Rudy Ryan.

“I have fought one of his girls before and they are brutal.”

Training under Garry King, who is based in both Portland and Heywood, Williams shows her dedication to the sport through multiple trips a week to train.

“I travel over to Portland or Heywood a couple of times a week – at the moment it’s more than that,” she said.

“I’m doing a lot.

“I have had to work out how to eat elite, so I’m going to a nutritionist to work out the last details of my diet.

“I train so hard and going backwards is not an option for me.”

After picking up boxing in 2010, Williams has trained under many Mount Gambier-based coaches as well, a factor she believes gives her an edge going into next week’s fight.

“Every trainer has trained me, it’s great,” she said.

“I have trained with Col (Colin Cassidy), I have trained with Barry Nilsson and I have also trained with Sam Dwyer.”

Williams’ passion for boxing is undeniable and it is one she often tries to pass on to others, with varying success.

“I just love boxing,” she said.

“I look at people and say you should fight, but I dunno, that’s my thing.

“I have come to realise it’s not for everyone.”

With a little over a week until her fight, Williams said she is more nervous about letting her coach and her supporters down, than she is about the fight itself.

“It’s not so much my nerves (for the fight), it is more the thought of letting my coach down, as well as my daughter and myself, but probably my coach more than anything,” she said.

The ‘War in the Bool 2’ is set to kick off at 3pm Victorian time, with the event expected to be big on the boxing calender.

“This is a massive fight for all of Victoria and South Australia,” Williams said.
