Fishing: Good week for shark anglers

CLARITY ON THE RIVER: Ryan Newman holds a pair of big bream caught in the Glenelg River.
GOOD CATCH: Some good-sized whiting caught throughout the fishing week.

WARM weather over the past week has been taken advantage of by plenty of fishos with some excellent catches as a result.

The offshore anglers had a ball this week with excellent gummy and school shark boated.

Fish around the 15kg mark have made up most of the captures, but there are still bigger sharks lurking around as well.

Terakhi, knife jaw and flathead have all been caught in good numbers and most have been of a fairly good size.

The fishos on the continental shelf have caught more blue eye this week and there is still the odd hapuka mixed in.

The boaters in close along the coast have landed some excellent fish as well.

Nigel Telford has caught some rippers, with Mulloway to 85cm, plus plenty of big whiting and snapper.

There have also been good numbers of squid and pike caught, a great sign as if the bait fish are hanging around, the bigger predators will not be too far away

Surf fishos made the most of the weather with plenty heading for the Coorong.

From the reports I have heard, few anglers came home empty handed.

The Mulloway fishing has so far been incredible, with fish to 15kg and if this trend continues, we will see a few bigger examples soon.

Sharks have been on the chew – gummies, schoolies and a few big bronze whalers have been caught and I know of a couple of bigger sharks hooked and lost.

Closer to home there has been plenty caught right through the South East.

Piccininni through to Paradise has been productive, with plenty of smaller gummies to 5-6kg and a few Mulloway a few centimetres either side of the 82cm limit.

Whiting numbers so far this season have been exceptional.

Fish up to and over the 50cm mark have been landed regularly, although most have been in the 35-45cm range.

The Port MacDonnell breakwater has been good for both boaties and land based anglers this week.

The jetty and boat ramp are the most preferred spots for the successful land fisho and the shallow holes off the end of Hammonds Drain are the best for boaties.

I know of some nice fish coming from the Blackfellows Caves and Carpenters Rocks areas and again, the mix between shore-based and boat has been 50/50.

Squid numbers have been good again this week, with plenty of bigger examples around the 2kg+ mark boated, along with many down to 1kg and under.

The best bet at the moment seems to be to rattle jigs under teaser floats, but the colour is not important.

I also know of plenty coming from the Cape Jaffa marina this week and casting seems to be the most productive method.

The inland fishing has remained hot again and redfin seem to be the top of everyone’s list.

Lake Toolondo and Rocklands have been the places I hear the most mentioned, but the reddies definitely are not limited to those two lakes.

Trout are still doing well at Edenhope and I have also heard of a few nice ones from Lake Koonongwootong.

The Glenelg River has been a little bit hot and cold this week.

The estuary area has fired for estuary perch and the guys trolling lures have done the best.

Small diving minnows, 50-75mm long have been the best bet and even a hungry bream or mulloway will take.

The mulloway have been elusive, with plenty showing on the fish finders, but few playing the game.

There has been the odd fish caught up around the Donovans to the Caves area on a mixture of live and dead baits, so that is an area worth spending some time.

This weekend looks to be quite good for those heading out on the water.

Winds are supposed to be backing down and the temperature is on the rise again, so we should be in for a good one.
