Sailors in full swing

BACK ON THE WATER: The Port MacDonnell Sailing Club is back in full swing for the 2017-18 season, with racing again this weekend.

PORT MacDonnell sailors are in full swing, with recent racing providing a challenge for the keen club members.

A great challenging course was set by the officer of the day David Carlyle in flat seas and a moderate South South West breeze for the seven starters in the first race – Papillon skippered by Mack Ferguson, Salt Peter with Robin White, Em the boys with Pete Douglas, Harmony with Don McLennan, Freycinet with Morris Dickins, Mirage with Dennis Illman and I Was Once with Greg Graham.

A great spectacle of boats big and small mulled around the start line and then all crossed the line within a minute, heading to the first mark.

The weather conditions remained constant all day allowing for an enjoyable time on the water.

The only one DNF for the day was Salt Peter with a rudder issue, leaving just six boats to start the second race of the day.

The race was hotly contested, with Graham taking I Was Once to victory in both events.

Race one saw Ferguson bring Papillon home second, with Dickins runner-up on Freycinet in the second event of the day.

This weekend’s race starts at 1pm and looking at the weather forecast, should be a perfect day to hit the water.

The club encourages new members or interested people club house on Sea Parade from around 11am to see and talk with skippers and crew about becoming involved.
