Division 1: Naracoorte 76/14 d Mount Gambier Red 68/2

ROUND 5 of the Open pennant competition saw Mount Gambier’s Division 1 Red team host Naracoorte on Saturday.

In a tight encounter, it was the guests who claimed the honours at the end of the day, after an even scoreline at the break.

Bec Gruar, Bryan Vorwerk, Peter Reppin and Greg Carpenter did their bit to win against Graham East’s team with a score of 28-21.

However Tony Renzi’s rink went down to Ian Williams in a tough game 20-27, while Tony Bowditch also went down for the hosts, losing to Ron Garton’s four with a score of 20-28.

Kalangadoo 97/14 d Mount Gambier Blue 53/2

IT was a similar result for Mount Gambier’s Division 1 Blue side, when it travelled to Kalangadoo to win on only one rink.

Leanne Hentschke, John Hughes, Kym Jones and Ian VonStanke won 29-25 against Kym Stewart’s rink, but this was the only success for the day.

Perria Davis and Gary Widdison went down by big margins to Graham Casey and Wayne Dowdell respectively, seeing the final margin irreparable for the visitors.

Division 2: Frances 83/16 d Mount Gambier 55/0

MOUNT Gambier Bowls Club’s Division 2 team suffered a convincing loss to Frances when it made the trip down the Riddoch Highway for Round 5.

Darryl Raneberg and his rink had a close match to go down by just one shot, but could not pull through for the points.

In the other games Frances controlled the play, as it powered home to claim the honours on all three rinks for the day.

Division 3: Mount Gambier 73/14 d Port MacDonnell 67/2

THE Mount Gambier Division 3 team returned from its trip to Port MacDonnell with a Round 5 win on its belt after Saturday’s Open Pennant clash.

Winning two of the three rinks, Tony Prugo’s team claimed an impressive 31-13 win, while John Kentish skippered his side to a narrow 23-21 triumph to push the team over the line for the overall win.

Division 4

THE Division 4 competition saw Mount Gambier travel to Lucindale on Saturday, where it suffered a narrow defeat.

Malcolm Schwarz and his team won their rink, but with losses on the other two, the winning margin was not quite enough to save the day.

Friday Pennant

MOUNT Gambier Bowls Club’s Division 1 Friday Pennant team had a success over Mount Gambier RSL last week as it hosted the Blue side.

With the final result seeing the home team with 45/13 to RSL’s 40/1, the first rink saw Sue Jolley, Jan McCarthy, Margaret Marshall and Leanne Hentschke play Kath Hearne’s experienced team.

The Mount Gambier women started slow and were down 9-15 at the break, but they gathered momentum in the afternoon to equalise on the 21st end, before coming home with a 24-19 win.

Gaylene Leggett, Barb Butchart, Judy Saint and Beryl Versluis played Shirley McIntyre’s team with a similar outcome.

Down 9-15 at the lunch break, the match finished with a draw on 21 shots each.
