Best behind the wheel – Australian Motorkhana Championship

THE Australian Motorkhana Championship saw a large crowd of enthusiasts gather at the Mount Gambier Saleyards recently to watch the best in the business do battle.

Mount Gambier’s very own South Eastern Automobile Club hosted the event which saw 64 competitors take to the difficult course.

An assortment of vehicles were on display over the course of the event, pitted against each other in classes that race against the clock.

A series of 12 tests were completed during the main event on Sunday and scores added.

Results are determined on fastest times over the 12 tests minus any penalties such as wrong direction or knocked cones and flags.

Keen competitors fared well despite the windy conditions and occasional shower.

First outright competitor was Western Australia’s Scott Bennett in the Turben Morris Special.

Bennett also took out his Class-F win.

South Australia’s David Beames drove his Mini Delta Special to score second outright for the day, while New South Wales’ Corrine East-Johnston drove the family Honda Special for third outright and first in the Ladies category.

South Australia’s Craig Williams was at his best in his Leyland Moke and scored the Class A win against some stiff competition.

Yet another South Australian competitor – Tony Wallis – took the Class B win in his Toyota Starlet.

Stephen Turner made the trip from Tasmania pay off to take out the Class C win in his Mitsubishi Mirage.

Australian Capital Territory’s Reece McIntosh drove his BMW M3 to claim the Class D victory, while South Australia’s Aaron Bowering scored the Class E win in his Suburu WRX.

Victorian Aaron Wuillemin powered his Honda Special around to claim Class G.

The Production Junior Category win went to South Australia’s Bradley Harry in his Toyota Starlet.

The shootout winner was Bennett, followed by Beames, Wuillemin, Dean Cook and Williams who was first production car.

WELL SUPPORTED: New South Wales’ Cobey East Johnson was one of the 64 competitors to take part in the Australian Motorkhana Championship at the Mount Gambier Saleyards.
