SOUTH Gambier put paid to any hopes West Gambier had of claiming the Under 17.5 Western Border Football League premiership, with three solid terms of football.

The Demons set the scene early in the game, pushing forward at every opportunity.

Much of that resulted in minor scores, but a Roos out-of-bounds from one of those kick-ins saw a short kick to Henri Capewell, who claimed the first of a bag of four.

Soon after, a long kick from centre-half-forward by Carey Megaw saw Todd Reid crumb off the pack and run into an open goal.

West was struggling against the stiffening breeze, with the frustration seeing a 50-metre penalty take Shannon Megaw to the goal square for an easy set shot, giving the Demons four for the quarter, with the Roos only able to add a single behind.

From there the Demons kicked on into the breeze, but Bowen Hosking managed an early goal for West to keep in touch.

However, it was the only major for the term, with the Demons adding a further two to extend their advantage at the half-time break.

By then West trailed by 34 points, but there was still hope with a solid third-quarter.

However, South put an end to that theory, with a goal from Capewell in the first minute of the term.

West’s William Owen was not about to give up, running along the wing and kicking into Lachlan Jones for a full-pointer, but Capewell was soon back in on the action at the other end of the ground to nullify the score.

By the final break the margin was 45 points and barring a miracle, the Demons were home.

West had the advantage of the wind in the final term, but needed a massive effort to come close to the Demons.

Hosking added his second goal inside the first minute of play to provide some spark and a minute later Jones added another to build the excitement.

But Tom Vassallo continued to have a major impact on the contest for the Demons, combining with Luke Bull and Alex Harkness to keep the dominant Demons ahead.

In the end it was too little, too late for the Roos, with the Demons running out emphatic winners.

For South, Capewell finished with four goals, while Adam Kuhl and Reid managed two each.

For West, Jones kicked three, while Hosking managed two.

Best for the Demons were Vassallo, Reid, Carey Megaw, Luke Bull, Capewell and Harkness.

Best for the Roos were Brodie Parsons, Hosking, Reid Kuller, Zane Kuller, Jones and Riley Wilson.

Vassallo was voted best-on-ground for his efforts.
