Keen anglers hit region’s waters

A BREEZY weekend made the conditions a bit tougher than we would like, but the keen anglers still hit the water and managed to find some nice fish.

The offshore fishos have had it tough this season, with only a handful of fishable days each month.

I have not heard of a lot this week due to the weather, but the most recent reports are still saying there is more big tuna passing through.

Once we get a break from the big seas, I would be surprised if we do not see another run of good fish caught.

The bottom bouncing has still been good, with plenty of big shark on offer, along with a few nice nannygai and snapper also.

The surf fishos have been doing well this past weekend, with some nice fish coming from right across the South East.

Piccininni Beach is still producing mulloway and gummy shark, along with plenty of salmon and even the odd elephant shark.

Canunda’s beaches have again produced some good salmon, with the pick being Whale Rock and Channel Rock.

The Oil Rig and Beachport salmon hole have both fished consistently also.

I have heard of a couple nice shark coming from the Cape Jaffa/Wrights Bay area, but be careful up there as the beach can get soft.

Quite a few crews are making the most of the weather early this weekend and heading for the Coorong, so hopefully I have got some news to share from that area next week.

The tremendous garfishing has continued again this week, with anglers managing to find big numbers of big fish in all the usual spots.

Cape Douglas, Livingstons Bay and even the Port MacDonnell Breakwater have all produced.

Waders are finding some excellent numbers from the beach, but the boaties in the slightly deeper water seem to have the advantage.

It has been a little while since we have seen the gar in such good numbers that we have had to worry about bag limits.

Just a reminder for the gar fishos that in last December, the bag limit was reduced to 30 per person.

The squid numbers have been pretty good again this week, with Livingson’s still being the hot spot.

Jig colour does not seem to matter at the moment, but just drifting under a float is a good way to fish.

Whiting fishos have dusted the gear off over the past week or so and had a bit of a crack.

I have not heard of any big numbers just yet, but the signs are encouraging for another great season to come.

Plenty of undersize fish tells us that we have got a healthy fishery, we just need the big fish to turn up in good numbers.

Mullet numbers have been fantastic again this week with some excellent catches of big fish coming from the corners of Red Rock and Lighthouse Bays.

The inland action this week has stayed red-hot, with some nice trout coming from Lake Wallace in Edenhope.

With the Lake Wallace fishing competition coming up in a little over a month’s time, the stage is set to be an absolute ripper weekend.

Redfin have still been quite cooperative this week, with some nice fish coming from Lake Koonongwootoong.

The lakes around Camperdown have continued to produce some lovely redfin, trout and salmon for the guys who are not afraid to fish the cold mornings and evenings.

Trolling deep lures or even soaking bait, there are plenty of options when it comes to fishing those lakes.

The Glenelg River has been excellent for the bait fishos this week, with a prawn or pilchard on the bottom catching plenty.

The bream have been quite good size this week, with some nearing that 40cm mark.

The guys putting in the time and pumping worms down the estuary are catching excellent numbers of fish in the clean blue water, and their size has been great too.

Estuary perch have been a tough nut to crack, with the odd fish being caught on a mixture of metal blades, and heavy weighted plastics.

The flow upstream still seems to be quite strong, so I would expect little change over the next week or so, but that should not bother the bait anglers at all.

The weekends weather at the moment looks a bit average – surprise, surprise – but there is plenty of landbased or inland options for the ones who just have to go fishing.

Until next week, safe fishing.
