There will be changes to parking in Mount Gambier/ Berrin with the City of Mount Gambier approving a new disabled permit zone and establishing a new zone in town at their May meeting.

Four disabled permit parking zones will be installed in the Sturt Street carpark behind the Mount Gambier Library.

Mayor Lynette Martin said community feedback highlighted difficulties faced by people with disabilities in finding accessible parking near our library.

“I am please that we have been able to do this, and I think this is a matter we have been working to resolve for a long time,” she said.

The spaces, directly rear to the library, would replace four regular spaces and a library vehicle reserved space.

Each space would be 3.2 metres in length and one would encroach 30 centimetres into the existing loading zone, which would still have a sufficient length of more than 6.5 metres, ensuring it remains usable.

A one-hour parking zone would also be established on the southern side of Commercial Street East, west of the Krummel Street intersection.

This was at the request of a nearby business which noted an old driveway had been removed and there was the opportunity for extra parking.

The space’s time limit would be in effect from 8am to 5pm on Monday through to Saturday and 8am to 12noon Saturday.

During the May 21 meeting there also was discussion of installing a no parking zone on Blackwood Street, with council voting to get more information before approving the change.

A request for the change was made by Hopgood’s Bus Service after they had had issues exiting their premises due to an increase in the number of vehicles parked around their driveway.
