Fill the car up before you go go

Motorists are being encouraged to fill up the their cars before they head out on their summer holidays, with fuel prices cheaper in the regions.

RAA fuel expert Mark Borlace said regional ULP prices did not fluctuate as much as metropolitan prices, so it would be cheaper to fill up outside of the city.

He said drivers could use fuel apps to see real time prices, but expected diesel prices would stay consistent across the state.

“For diesel car drivers, prices will likely be similar or slightly cheaper in Adelaide, so check the RAA app and fill up where you see it cheapest,” he said.

Mr Borlace also urged drivers to make sure their cars were up to date with servicing and conduct simple safety checks on their vehicle to make sure any road trips go smoothly over summer.

He said a basic check list included making sure the oil and water levels were good, and that the spare tyre was in place and inflated.

“While you’re at it, check that all your tyres are inflated to the correct pressure and have at least 1.6mm of tread on them,” he said.

“You can also check the aim of your headlights to ensure they’re pointing towards the road and not at other drivers. Do this by turning them on against a wall and reversing slowly, checking that the light travels down as you drive backwards.”

Other safety tips from Mr Borlace included thinking about how best to pack your car, caravan or trailer.

“When packing your car for a trip, place your heaviest items at the bottom and against your back seats so they don’t slide around,” he said.

“If you’re towing a trailer, boat or caravan, make sure your load is even, secure and within the weight limits of your vehicle. And get someone to check all your lights are working before heading off.”
