Wattle Range towns in running for top spot

Penola and Kalangadoo are in the running to be Ag Town of the Year.

A NUMBER of Limestone Coast towns have the chance to prove that they are the top town.

Penola, Kalangadoo, Naracoorte, Lucindale, Bordertown, Kingston SE and have been nominated for Ag Town of the Year, and locals are encouraged to vote.

Public voting is now open to choose the Top 10 ag towns in the 2023 South Australian Agricultural Town of the Year Award.

Penola’s nomination highlights the Coonawarra wine region, and Saint Mary McKillop.

Kalangadoo is described as “a very active community supporting farming and local businesses.”

Naracoorte was nominated for the significant growth the local agricultural sector has recently seen with several large companies expanding in the area, while Lucindale was nominated for being a central locations to some of Australia’s best wine regions, as well as having a diverse range of farming practices in the region.

Bordertown’s nomination describes the “economic prosperity of the region surrounding Bordertown” and said it is closely tied to the agricultural sector and is well regarded for the quality and reliability of it’s productive capability.

Kingston South East’s agricultural productions, cattle production, horticulture, viticulture and aquaculture was the reason for it’s nomination.

The award highlights the importance of developing and maintaining a strong and vibrant agriculture sector in South Australia by recognising towns excelling in agricultural practices, strengthening their region, and supporting a vibrant and resilient community.

Minister for Regional development Clare Scriven encouraged locals to vote for their favourite town.

“This is a fantastic opportunity to highlight and promote our regions, as well as celebrate the significant $29 billion contribution that our regions make to the state’s economy each year.

“I encourage everyone to get online and support the town they see showcasing the best that our regional communities represent.”

A total of 49 towns from across the state were nominated in the and voting will now determine the Top 10 Ag Towns, based on the towns with the most votes.

The winning town will receieve recognition as the ‘South Australian Agricultural Town of the Year’, as well, town entrance sign recognising their achievement, certificate and trophy presented by Ms Scriven, community event and sign unveiling to celebrate the town’s achievement and a double-page feature in SALIFE magazine.

The ‘Top 10’ will be announced on Monday, 3 July, and then an independent judging panel will select three finalist towns.

They will then be subject to town visits
