THE Limestone Coast is expecting huge celebrations to send the year off in style, but festivities could mean stress and panic for the region’s pets.

Blue Lake Family Veterinary Clinic has advised residents to spare a thought for their pets during New Year’s Eve celebrations.

The Clinic said people should bring their fuzzy friends indoors and keep them company during fireworks where possible to help reduce stress.

It said if that was not possible or people were not going to be home with their pets, they should consider either leaving music or TV on to keep pets company, or to explore medication options.

The festive season has previously seen numerous pets go missing, and the Clinic said people need to make sure they keep track of their pets.

“Make sure all gates and doors are closed while family and friends are around to ensure no pet’s escape,” it said.

“If dogs are unfamiliar with other dogs coming over for [celebrations], do not leave them unattended together.”

The Clinic also said pet owners should also keep vigilant ahead of warmer weather as animals can be susceptible to high temperatures.

“Do not take them for walks in the heat, do not take them for car rides [and] keep water available,” it said.
