THE Independent Learning Centre (ILC) is celebrating its students after their entries in the Mount Gambier Show received numerous accolades across a range of categories.

ILC students were encouraged to enter Show competitions in areas including textiles, photography and cooking as part of their curriculum.

They were rewarded for their efforts with great results, including first place for scones and a best in section award.

ILC manager David Burt said he was incredibly proud of his students and all the work they had put in over the year to learn their crafts.

“Having an external organisation recognise their work for being outstanding is a wonderful confidence builder,” Mr Burt said.

“On top of that, it also shows the community how fabulous our kids are and they are worthwhile citizens who are well worth supporting.

“They might be doing their education differently, but that doesn’t mean they’re any less valued.”

He said he hopes these results encourage the students to keep honing their skills.

“For some of them, I imagine it’s going to be the start of a journey as opposed to the finish of a subject,” he said.

Photography student Shakayla was named best in her section after entering a picture in the novice photography section.

She said she did not think her photo would win, but she was really excited to find out she had done so well.

“I was kind of nervous with the photo because I thought there was another one of the same photo but different quality that I could have used instead of that one,” she said.

Shakayla said she was really focused on composition when she took the photo.

“For me, I think it’s getting the right angle and trying to have the background cooperate with the image you’re trying to create,” she said.

“As for my winning photo, I did a portrait of my step mum and I had the lights in the back so I had to make sure they were okay with the lights in the front.”

She said the win makes her want to enter more photos at the Show next year.
