MOUNT GAMBIER CATTLE

Numbers fell by almost half as agents yarded 214 head of liveweight and open auction cattle.

These sold to the regular field of trade and processor buyers with most of these only partially active with the small number as feeders and restockers also picking their way through.

Quality continues to be very mixed with most pens showing signs of winter with the bright spot in the market being the cow section which made up around half of the offering and they received a lift in price of 10c to 15c/kg.

Yearling steers failed to attract the trade buyers while they did source heifers from 450c to 538c/kg.

Feeders operated on the steers from 522c to 548c and on heifers from 412c to 476c/kg.

Restockers sought steers to 486c and heifers to 540c/kg.

A solitary grown steer went to feed at 498c/kg as grown heifers ranged from 350c to 478c to the trade, and from 370c to 466c/kg to feed on.

Manufacturing steers made from 350c to 366c/kg.

Heavy cows attracted the most competition to sell from 340c to 399c/kg with lighter types making from 323c to 338c/kg.

Bulls returned from 278c to 335c/kg.

NARACOORTE CATTLE

Tuesday, August 9

A smaller yarding of 151 cattle were penned at Naracoorte this week, made up of 91 young cattle, 41 cows, 16 bulls and a few open auction young cattle.

Quality was mixed with the regular buying group operating selectively along with restockers and feeders.

The market was mostly firm, dearer on the quality young cattle to the trade in places.

Yearling steers sold from 499c to 530c to the trade and from 450c to 530c/kg to restockers and feeders.

A few vealers sold to 440c to the trade and from 450c to 498c/kg to restockers.

A hand full of grown steers sold from 440c to 465c, with grown heifers selling from 365c to 465c and feeders paying 390c/kg.

Heavy cows sold from 340c to 380c, plainer types sold at 192c/kg.

Restockers paid from 252 to 259c kg.

Medium weight bulls sold from 362c to 450c, heavy weights sold from 309c to 335c/kg, restockers paid from 356c to 450c/kg.

NARACOORTE SHEEP AND LAMB

A small yarding of 1,030 lambs and 373 sheep penned at Naracoorte this week.

Quality was mixed but with several pens of well presented heavier weight lambs yarded.

The regular buying group attended and operated in a stronger market with the better covered lambs sought after.

The medium and heavy trade weight lambs sold from $162 to $201, with heavier weights selling to $246/head for a good result.

Merino lambs sold from $123 to $165/head.

The small sheep yarding sold to strong competition to be dearer, Merino ewes sold to $150, Merino wethers sold to $155 and crossbred ewes sold to $180/head.

Light weight lambs sold from $110 to $135/head and averaged 700c/kg cwt.

Light trade weight lambs sold from $140 to $167/head and averaged 720c/kg cwt.

Medium trade weight lambs sold from $162 to $186/head and averaged 745c/kg cwt.

Heavy trade weight lambs sold from $190 to $201/head and averaged 750c/kg cwt.

Export weight lambs sold from $194 to $225 with the extra heavy lambs selling from $238 to $246/head.

Hogetts ranged from $140 to $190/head.

Light weight sheep sold from $52 to $88/head and averaged 500c/kg cwt.

Medium weight sheep sold from $94 to $143/head with Merino mutton averaging 560c/kg cwt.

Heavy Merino ewes sold from $140 to $150, Merino wethers sold from $152 to $155/head, the heavy Merino sheep ranged from 550c to 565c/kg cwt.

Crossbred ewes sold from $120 to $180/head.

Rams ranged from $102 to $152/head.
