CURRENT Mount Gambier City Council Mayor Lynette Martin will be seeking a second term in her position at the upcoming elections.

Ms Martin said she believed she still had more to accomplish in the position.

“In contemplating the future of our wonderful city, I have decided to nominate again for the position of Mayor,” Ms Martin said.

“I believe to be elected as a mayor or Councillor by the community is an honour, and I have enjoyed the privilege to serve as Mayor to the City of Mount Gambier for the last four years.”

Ms Martin won the Mayoral race convincingly in 2018, receiving more than 66 per cent of the first preference votes ahead of candidates Andrew Lee and Mark Jones.

When reflecting on the previous term, Ms Martin said she was proud of what she and her colleagues have been able to accomplish.

“It is a role I have found both challenging and rewarding,” Ms Martin said.

“I am proud of the achievements of Elected Members and Council Administration working together to improve the amenity of our city and create opportunities for growth and economic sustainability.”

“Another term would enable me to play a role in continuing to create a vision for our city’s future.“

Council elections are due to be held state-wide in November, with nominations opening on 23 August.

Unlike previous elections, nominations to become mayor or a councillor will not be posted publicly until they have closed on 6 September.

The change means the community may be in with a longer wait than previously to find out who the candidates are or how competitive the race will be.

During the last election in 2018, 19 candidates contested the eight general vacancies on the Mount Gambier City Council, with a quota of 862 needed to be elected.

No other candidates within Mount Gambier have publicly stated their intention to run at the time of print.
