PENOLA couple Kerry and Shane McPherson have topped the chain of IGA National Awards following their official induction into the hall of fame.

The award announcement was made by their son who had been flown from Queensland for the special occasion alongside their other two children from Mount Gambier.

Speaking with The Border Watch, Mr McPherson said the two were in total shock at the announcement and had no idea it was going to happen.

“We were sitting there watching the proceedings and didn’t know we had received the award until we heard our son’s voice,” Mr McPherson said.

“The Hall of Fame is an unbelievable award and not something that is given lightly.

“The calibra of recipients from the past is amazing and isn’t something we ever thought we would achieve.”

He said the two were shocked and overwhelmed with the award, labelling it an honour to receive it.

“Having our kids there made it extra special and it was a tremendous evening,” Mr McPherson said.

Being in the industry for over 30 years, Mr and Ms McPherson have received a number of other awards across the years, including the National Channel Two Store of the Year in 2011 and the Community Award.

“Having the backing of the community and the support has been fantastic and we do everything we can to give back to the community as much as possible,” Mr McPherson said.

“We love having contact with the public and trying to run the business with good family values has been a challenge but it is worth it to have that contact with the public.”

As for the future, the McPherson’s said they would continue on as is with the store.

“We love what we do, we love the industry and the contact with the public,” Mr McPherson said.

“I hope we can continue to be as good as we can for our customers and our community.

“It is also fantastic to have the backing of the IGA network too as they are all a wonderful team to work with.”
