Heritage showcased through garden

INDIGENOUS LEARNING: Penola High School Year 10 student Phillip Davis recently completed a garden out the front of the school, with the Aboriginal Flag as the focus.

PENOLA High School’s front garden has received a face lift with the Aboriginal flag as its main focus.

Year 10 student Phillip Davis recently completed the garden renovations as part of his design and space task in State 1 Essential Maths.

The student was required to measure the area, draw scale diagrams and work out plant density from the planting guides.

Mr Davis stated the main reason behind the project was his wish to recognise the Indigenous culture and heritage within the area.

He sourced materials and within weeks the project was finished and his efforts rewarded.

The Aboriginal flag was designed and created by artist Harold Thomas, a Luritja man from central Australia and a member of the Stolen Generations.

It has since become a ssymbol of Aboriginal Australia, holding special legal and political status worldwide.

The top half of the flag is black to symbolise Aboriginal people whilst the red in the lower half stands for the earth and the colour of ochre, which has ceremonial significance and the circle of yellow in the centre of the flag represents the sun.
