Influenza death toll rises

NEARLY 100 people have now officially died from influenza this year, according the latest update by SA Health.

There have been more than 22,000 notifications of influenza virus infection reported to the Communicable Disease Control Branch, compared with 1812 cases reported for the same period last year.

Of these notifications, more than 12,000 were in females and nearly 10,000 males.

Ages range from below one years to 105 years, with a median age of 32 years.

More than 20,000 cases (90pc) were due to influenza A and more than 2000 cases (10pc) were due to influenza B virus.

More than 2000 cases were hospital inpatients.

Ninety-nine cases (0.44pc) were reported to have died from influenza virus infection (age range 15 to 100 years).
