ELECTED members have praised the recent commemorative Rook Walk event, with Mount Gambier Mayor Lynette Martin commending organisers and attendees on the “outstanding” service.
Hundreds of school children and community members gathered last month at the Crater Lakes precinct for a centenary celebration of the community effort to build the landmark in a single day.
In collaboration with the Mount Gambier History Group, City Council hosted the event to pay tribute to the volunteers who participated in the largest working bee in the city’s history.
The event included a cake cutting ceremony and time capsule preparation, as well as entertainment from the Mount Gambier city and Salvation Army bands and Compton Primary School.
Ms Martin said the event emphasised the importance of volunteers in the community.
Councillor Sonya Mezinec highlighted the success of the event, with Cr Ben Hood saying it exemplified “what a community can do when they get together and have a crack”.
