Millicent store faces further reorganisation

A FURTHER reorganisation of Millicent’s IGA supermarket may be on the cards if the store is determined to be over 400 square metres, Treasurer Rob Lucas says.

Following the defeat of the State Government’s Retail Trading Hour Act, Mr Lucas said SafeWork SA would start enforcing the law, which restricts large stores from opening at certain times.

Notices informing retailers of potential breaches are currently being drafted and are expected to be distributed “in the near future”, Mr Lucas said.

“The retailers will be advised there is a question of whether they are operating lawfully,” he said.

“If they are operating outside of the silly laws we have got, they will have to adjust their store.”

Millicent IGA has altered its store at least twice, with the first change in 2016 resulting in a number of fridges and freezers being brought in from the walls.

Earlier this year, a SafeWork SA audit found the store was still over 400 square metres.

Eudunda Farmers (IGA) director Bill Schuller repudiated the findings, saying it was his company’s belief the trading area was 396 square metres.
