Storm brings down power

STORM activity cut power to around 1500 homes, farms and businesses in the South East region over the weekend with the majority of outages caused by lightning.

The worst affected area was Glenburnie with around 680 properties losing power for over 20 hours.

It went off at 9.04pm on Friday and was not fully restored until 5.25pm the following day.

There was also a lengthy wait for 647 property owners in the Wrattonbully area on Saturday with an outage lasting almost 12 hours from 12.56am until 12.36pm.

The power went off in the Tantanoola and German Flat areas at 11pm on Friday and SA Power Networks maintenance crews re-connected the 109 affected properties by 4pm on Saturday.

Power was cut on Saturday to 40 Yahl properties and six at Blackfellows Caves.

SA Power Networks spokesperson Rani Yorkston said two storm fronts passed over the South East – one on Thursday night into Friday morning and one on Friday night into Saturday morning.

“The second front was the strongest, with winds gusting to gale force in parts of the South East from early evening Friday to mid-morning Saturday,” Ms Yorkston said.

“Damaging wind gusts recorded overnight included 115kph at Mount Gambier and 98kph at Cape Jaffa.”

She said a power cut to 56 Millicent central business district properties yesterday was caused by birds.

Power was lost between 9.34am and 1pm with the Woolworths supermarket forced to close its doors.

There was a windfall for customers at the Woolworths supermarket as the check-outs became non-operational and trading ceased.

As a result, the customers already in the store were allowed by management to bag their collected goods and leave the store without making payment.

One female shopper estimated she had saved $150 on her weekly shop, while a male customer said he had made a saving of $50.
