Farming accident brings down live powerlines

LIVE powerlines were accidentally brought to the ground by a farmer sowing a wheat crop at a property near Penola yesterday afternoon.

He was driving a tractor which was towing a seeder and the apparatus made contact with a stobie pole at about 1.40pm.

As soon as he became aware of the accident on his Maaoupe property, he stopped the tractor and alerted the emergency services via a mobile phone.

Wattle Range Country Fire Service group officer Fred Stent said the situation was potentially dangerous as the powerlines were live.

Mr Stent said it took around 90 minutes to resolve the situation and the stranded farmer kept in contact with his family via mobile phone.

“We arranged for SA Power Networks to come and disconnect the power,” Mr Stent said.

“It was a good result.”
