Local schools recognised for being sun smart

SCHOOLS throughout the region have been acknowledged by Cancer Council SA for their SunSmart membership milestones and commitment to reducing the risk of skin cancer in future generations.

Melaleuca and Kongorong primary schools, Community Kids Montebello and Mount Gambier early education centres and Mount Gambier Child Care Centre have all been recognised for reaching a milestone of 10 years.

Meanwhile, Goodstart Early Learning Centre Mount Gambier has reached a five year milestone.

“We congratulate these schools and early childhood centres that have been part of the SunSmart program over a sustained period and we encourage other sites to ensure they are receiving the most up-to-date information and advice by also becoming officially SunSmart,” Cancer Council SA chief executive officer Lincoln Size said.

“The UV is high enough to damage skin for much of the year in South Australia, so prioristising sun protection and awareness from an early age is vital.

“Unfortunately, the common ‘no hat, play in the shade’ practice we see in some SA schools during terms one and four is really not enough.”

Mr Size said the SunSmart Proram recognises best practice sun protection strategies in schools and early childhood centres and is free to join, including all the support, curriculum resources and iconic SunSmart sign.

“The implementation of a SunSmart policy across all schools and centres ensures children and staff have adequate sun protection during peak UV radiation times,” he said.

“School and early childhood centre staff simple do not have the time to remain aware of the best evidence and to formulate policies which will protect children and this is where we are here to help.”

Each of the schools and centres in the region have received a certificate recognising the milestone achievement.
