Low income power price cuts sought

LOW income households may have their power bills slashed as the State Government seeks to negotiate electricity contracts with suppliers on their behalf.

The State Government will invite energy companies to submit expressions of interest to become suppliers for households that currently receive energy concessions.

Communites and Social Inclusion Minister Zoe Bettison said the savings from buying in bulk would be passed on to consumers.

“We know the majority of people receiving the State Government’s energy concessions are on standing contracts and we believe we can negotiate a much better deal for them,” she said.

“Energy retailers have the opportunity to give low income customers a better deal and promote their commitment to social responsibility whilst consumers have a chance to save money and access better payment options.”

The State Government said more than 180,000 low income earners would be eligible for the energy discount.

Groups likely to benefit include public and community housing tenants, older South Australians and individuals with disabilities.
