1985 Holden VK Commodore

PETER Roulston’s 1985 VK Holden Commodore played a vital role in the Great Escape Cystic Fibrosis Car Bash fundraiser last week, raising money for the organisation.

Peter traveled alongside his son Jarred on the 11-day trek from Ararart to Mount Gambier.

“We designed the car with a “Back to the Future” theme this year, and on its own it raised $10,000 for the charity convoy,” Mr Roulston said.

The car is equipped with a 3.3 litre engine and was valued at $4,000 when first released.

Editions to the vehicle included roof racks, raised suspension and larger tires which were needed for the car to meet the requirements of the bash.

“The vehicle is mostly used in rallies and fundraising for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation,” Mr Roulston said.

He said the car has been involved in the Great Escape Cystic Fibrosis Car Bash since 2007.

“I first traveled with the car convoy as a passenger in 2007, and I have enjoyed it ever since,” he said.

“I have only missed two rallies since 2007 and with this vehicle I have completed seven all together.”

Due to the difficult track and wet conditions the father and son due experienced a few minor mishaps along the journey.

“During the journey we blew a tire, had to replace bolts on the roof rack and I also came down with the flu so I was bed ridden for a few days,” Mr Roulston said.

“But all in all it is part and parcel of it – we do it for the cause and it also makes for a fun and fantastic time.”

Mr Roulston bought the car from an elderly man living in New South Wales who drove the car daily for 15 years.

“I still have the owner’s original car book and first noticed the car when I was car searching online,” Mr Roulston said.

Mr Roulston is part of the Mount Gambier Veteran and Vintage Car Club and in addition to the VK Holden Commodore, he owns a 1976 Chrysler Charger.
