LOCAL identities Alex and Amanda Gordon had an obvious location in mind when they celebrated a decade in business in Millicent.
The pair have operated the Somerset Hotel since 2010 and are popular publicans at Millicent’s oldest and largest hotel.
The anniversary party was held at their George Street landmark last weekend, with plenty of complimentary food and music from entertainer Shaun Kirk.
It has been a momentous 10 years at The Somerset, but a period which has left the Gordon family with few regrets.
With Alex’s background as a chef and Amanda’s experience in the retail and hospitality industries, the Gordons searched for a hotel to manage.
Mr Gordon said they were living in Adelaide at the time, but were looking for a country pub.
They have no plans to return to the capital city.
“We decided to come to Millicent as it was a friendly place to raise our daughter Isla,” Mr Gordon said.
“We like being a part of the Millicent community and the party was a way of thanking our staff and our customers for their support.
“We want to keep on improving in what we do at the pub.”
Under their watch, the hotel has had a number of upgrades including a makeover of its dining room in 2018.
Staff numbers have almost doubled in the past decade from 23 to 41.
With the bars, dining room, bottle shop, gaming and accommodation, it is a busy life for the Gordons.
Ms Gordon said her husband is on duty up to 100 hours per week.
On the occasional break from the hotel, Mr Gordon likes to take his 1970-era Triumph car on the open road.
Ms Gordon also served a number of years as secretary of the Millicent Business Community Association.
The impact of the Gordon family on the town has been a positive one according to regular customer Anthony D’Onghia.
The bottom bar patron acknowledged the sponsorships provided to various groups.
“Alex and Amanda are good people,” Mr D’Onghia said.
“They are hard workers and lead by example.”
“They have created a great atmosphere at the pub.”
The Somerset is only a few years away from marking its 150th anniversary as it first opened its doors in 1872.
