Robe assault investigated during New Years Eve celebrations at Robe

LIMESTONE Coast Police are investigating allegations of a serious sexual assault against a young woman at Robe on New Year’s Eve.

Police patrols and paramedics were called to Long Beach just before 12am following reports of a sexual assault.

The 17-year-old female victim was allegedly assaulted by another 17-year-old at the location.

Limestone Coast Police officer in charge Superintendent Phil Hoff said no charges had been laid, however police were investigating.

“Police from Mount Gambier will be escorting the young woman to an Adelaide hospital for forensic examination as Mount Gambier Hospital will not provide the services required,” Supt Hoff said.

“Investigations are continuing.”

Meanwhile in Beachport, police responded to a behavioural-related incident among revellers at the height of the festive season.

Beachport police officer-in-charge Brevet Sergeant Nick Wood said a Mount Gambier man was arrested and charged with disorderly behaviour on Boxing Day.

Bvt Sgt Wood also told The Border Watch a police drug sniffer dog was deployed a Beachport pub over the weekend, but no illicit substances were found.

The dog’s Adelaide-based handler was assisted by uniformed police from Beachport, Millicent and Mount Gambier and the dog made 13 detections.

Bvt Sgt Wood said this indicated the particular person under scrutiny had either consumed drugs recently or been in the presence of drugs.

He said no further police action was warranted in such circumstances.

According to Bvt Sgt Wood, the dog was only used at the one Beachport property.

On New Year’s Eve, there were 106 arrests across the state, 20 people were reported and 92 expiation notices issued for offences including possession of drugs, possessing or consuming alcohol in a dry zone and behavioural offences.

Police noted it was a reduction from last year’s statewide statistics.

5000 drug and alcohol tests were conducted overnight across South Australia on Tuesday, with 24 positive results to alcohol and 15 positive drug tests.

Again, the numbers are lower in comparison to New Year’s Eve in 2018.

Police numbers at Beachport have currently been boosted with patrols from Millicent and Beachport.
