MILLICENT North Primary School’s greenthumbs have received a massive financial boost, with two businesses providing funds to help establish a vegetable garden.
The school’s dream garden will soon become a reality after Infigen Energy and South East Property Sales each donated $500 to the project.
Millicent North Primary School principal Graham Slarks said the garden would consist of two plots, with the possibility of more to be planted depending on interest.
He said the donation would allow the project to start earlier than anticipated.
“Something which may have taken us two years can now be done in 12 months,” Mr Slarks said.
An additional $500 contribution from South East Property Sales will provide equipment for the school’s girls woodworking class, which was established last year following requests by female students.
Mr Slarks said the school would invest in power tools including a jigsaw cutter, cordless drill and a ratchet gun.
“We would often have too many girls and not enough tools, with large periods of waiting around for some of them,” Mr Slarks said.
“With more tools we can keep working on the little projects but also plan things which are more elaborate.
“This has all been driven by the enthusiasm of the girls.”
“The girls’ confidence has grown as they are learning more skills and Leon Miels has been a massive help in getting the program started.”
South East Property Sales and Management accounts and administration officer Kelly Brown said the business was happy to support the school’s project.
“When Graham Slarks contacted us and told us what he was working on, we decided to give $500 to the girls’ woodworking and $500 to the garden,” she said.
“With $500 the girls can get more power tools such as jigsaw cutters, cordless drills and a ratchet gun.
