STILL ON BOARD: Limestone Coast Family Violence Action Group chairperson Sonya Mezinec says South East events will still go ahead.

WHITE Ribbon Day events across the Limestone Coast will continue despite White Ribbon Australia announcing it has been placed into voluntary administration yesterday morning.

The national organisation has delivered domestic and family violence prevention support services since its establishment in 2007.

Limestone Coast Family Violence Action Group chairperson Sonya Mezinec said events held around the region would continue despite the sudden closure.

“These events are focused more on the movement rather than the organisation itself,” Ms Mezinec said.

“It is organised locally and not by the organisation itself and therefore will not affect any events.

“However it is disappointing to hear the organisation is closing, but in many ways it does not effect the work that will continue on because we have groups within our community that are working hard and raising awareness around domestic and family violence and that will continue.”

November will see a range of events held around Mount Gambier, starting with the White Ribbon Day Breakfast held on November 22 with the 16 Days of Activism beginning on International Day Against Violence Against Women three days later.

“The 16 Days of Activism will be held from November 25 until December 12 and we are looking for community groups interested in hosting events,” Ms Mezinec said.

“We will be asking them to host awareness raising activities across those days which could be anything they would like to do.”

Ms Mezinec said the support group would start advertising in the coming weeks.

White Ribbon Australia released a statement yesterday revealing the decision to close its doors was seen as necessary following an “analysis of the organisation’s future sustainability.”

The statement said the organisation was proud to serve alongside many dedicated partner organisations, grassroots communities and government in the “important work of ending men’s violence against women”.

The organisation encouraged communities hosting White Ribbon Day to continue with plans.
