INFRASTRUCTURE, health, arts, sport and tourism are areas residents want to see an increased focus on in order to make Millicent more vibrant.

Around 50 residents attended last week’s Millicent Community Town Plan meeting to drive the strategic development of the town for the next decade.

Guided by Wattle Range Council development services director Steve Chapple and Millicent Business Community Association chair Lee Morgan attendees discussed ways to bolster Millicent’s identity for residents and tourists.

Ideas raised by the attendees will form part of a new town plan, which will share ideas on accommodation development, tourism, commerce, education, health, primary production, recreation and transport.

Mr Chapple said the long-term plan aimed to provide a clear idea of Millicent’s identity.

“The existing Millicent Community Town Plan is a mash of ideas and we need things to be strategic,” he said.

“We need a coordinated approach for social, cultural and economic development and surrounding enterprises.

“Our history section should give an indication of who we are and where we come from.”

Mr Morgan said recent developments, including public art and an increased focus on shopping local, had already helped Millicent bolster its identity.

He said the community association would help draft and direct the document with residents then selected to sit on the town plan’s sub-committee.

“This is not just a council plan, this is for the community,” he said.

“It is a new way of thinking and working together.

“You need to create a plan that gives some direction for the future.”
