PRIMARY school students across Australia were in the mood to shake maracas with alpacas today as part of the 2019 National Simultaneous Storytime.

Every year a picture book, written and illustrated by Australians, is read simultaneously in educational institutes, book stores and homes across the country, with today’s 11am reading featuring Alpacas with Maracas by Matt Cosgrove.

Yahl Primary School teacher Kirsty Michalski said the event was a fun and interactive way to promote literacy and reading to students.

“The event promotes an exciting way for students to learn and promote the love of reading,” she said.

“I think most teachers want to provide literacy and learning opportunities while also giving the chance to have fun.

“If children develop a healthy relationship with reading early we hope they will continue to read as they get older.

“I was talking to my class and they can still remember last year’s book.

“They knew straight away as the story sticks with them as it is related to a fun experience.”

Ms Michalski said some schools design relatable activities for students based off the reading experience for further learning development.

“Sometimes we will pull out vocabulary and deconstruct its meaning or we might focus on the illustrations,” she said.
