Buzzer-beater saves the day for Panthers

PANTHERS 101 d BULLDOGS BLUE 92

THE highlight of last Wednesday’s South East Coast Basketball League men’s competition was an overtime victory to Panthers over Bulldogs Blue.

Bulldogs had the three premiership points within their grasp with 60 seconds left to play, but a huge Kurt Rodis prayer from downtown seconds before the final whistle saw three points scored and tie the game up.

With five minutes of extra time, Bulldogs’ Will Wright opened the scoring, only to be answered by a three-pointer from Panthers’ Jaidyn Lawrence.

From there on it was all Panthers, as they capitalised on strong defence to win 101-92.

It was an exciting and high-scoring game for the full 40 minutes and kept spectators entertained throughout.

Panthers led by three points at the first break, while Bulldogs held a one-point advantage at the long break, before the final change saw a 66-all scoreline.

Rodis and Bulldogs’ Simon Berkefeld made blazing starts for their sides and were “go to” players, while Bulldogs’ Mitch Hunter and Panthers’ Brad Jachmann caused havoc inside.

Berkefeld was impressive in the final 10 minutes and top scored with a solid 41 points, despite the loss.

Other leading scorers were Hunter on 33, Rodis on 26, Lawrence with 25, Panthers’ Jak Ryan on 22 and Jachmann with 12.

BULLDOGS RED 78 d ROOS 58

THE round three South East Coast basketball clash between Bulldogs Red and Roos opened with high energy from both teams.

Brodie Jolley scored the first five points for Roos, before Matt Black lit up the scoreboard for Bulldogs.

Junior Duncan Reid then chipped in with nine points to help set up a three-point lead for Bulldogs at quarter time.

Defensive pressure and strong rebounding caused some wayward shooting by Roos in the second term.

Black continued as a threat in offence, scoring 15 points to give his side an 11-point buffer at the main break, while Jolley led Roos with nine points.

Roos’ shooting percentage lifted from here and the third quarter was even, with Black and Jolley making an impact under the hoop.

Despite the even term, Bulldogs remained in front and extended their lead to 20 by the final siren for a 78-58 point win.

Jolley finished with 16 points for Roos, supported by Caleb Bachmann with 17.

Bulldogs had depth in their scoring through Matt Black with 27 points, while brother Luke scored 17, Reid shot 13 and Peter Loring had
11.
