LIFE GOAL: South Australian Ambulance Service volunteer Nerridy Miatke said volunteering with the emergency service has helped her achieve a life-long dream.

THE South Australian Ambulance Service (SAAS) is calling on Lower South East locals to take the step and find out more about becoming an ambulance volunteer in Penola.

The call comes as the ambulance service launches its latest recruitment campaign in the region – live your life while saving others – which demonstrates how easy it is to sign up, train and balance life with volunteer hours.

Limestone Coast volunteer Nerridy Miatke said she joined SAAS over a year ago because she wanted to make a difference and fulfil a lifelong dream.

“I had always wanted to be a nurse but I never pursued it,” she said.

“Volunteering with SAAS has provided me with a way to do what I am passionate about.

“It is so important to have these services available to the community in times of emergency.

“If you love helping others and want to do something rewarding for both yourself and the community, it is a great way to start.”

SAAS has introduced a range of programs to make volunteering easier to fit lifestyles, with the pace of training able to be personalised.

Volunteers could be driving an ambulance, supporting an ambulance officer in just seven training days.

Ms Miatke, who also works for a local transport company and has served other volunteer organisations, said the ambulance rosters were flexible in working around her other commitments.

“We are looking for locals to put their hand up to support their community and volunteer to help provide a sustainable service to their area,” regional team leader Joe Renko said.

“Volunteers can respond from their homes or workplaces.

“We have volunteers that work full-time jobs and we work with employers to understand and facilitate that.

“It’s that kind of flexibility that helps make sure rosters are covered.

“Any hours that you can offer are welcome.”
