A REVAMPED outdoor play area has encouraged South East kindergarten children to venture outdoors and get their hands dirty while growing an appreciation of the natural environment.

Earlier this year the Kalangadoo Kindergarten received $5000 from the Stand Like Stone Foundation to help with stage one of its nominated nature play space project.

Director Jo Wilson said the centre was grateful to receive funding, adding it was of great benefit to the children and their learning.

“The previous playground was very old and in desperate need of a revamp or renewal with some structures becoming unsafe,” she said.

“This is stage one of the redevelopment, the other stages look at creating quiet play spaces down the side of the kindergarten.

“With the upgrade of the play space we are finding that supervision and the ability to interact is much greater as this space allows for greater imaginative play.

Ms Wilson said the mud kitchen was a popular addition among staff and children.

The log area provided children with endless possibilities for play.

“The time spent outside has stayed the same, however we are seeing more imaginative play and a deeper engagement with their natural surroundings,” Ms Wilson said.

Ms Wilson said children toured a variety of outdoor learning environments to explore and make informed decisions to support plans in their outdoor area.

She said educators ensured children had a voice and were part of the planning process.
