A MILLICENT man who assaulted his domestic partner and the owner of a business where she sought refuge has been remanded in custody.
Cody Davis, 21, appeared in the Mount Gambier Magistrates Court after being arrested on Friday in relation to a domestic violence incident.
The prosecution said the incident occurred in the morning, when the owner of a shop was opening for business in Millicent.
A female ran inside the shop, seeking refuge from the defendant.
She told the shop owner she “needed protection” and asked him to call police.
The owner of the business then went outside and observed Davis walking up the street.
Davis then approached the shop and requested to come inside.
When the shop owner refused, Davis became argumentative and belligerent.
Davis pushed the shop owner who fell into the fridges, before demanding the female victim give his wallet back.
She threw the wallet back in his direction.
Instead of leaving the premises, Davis walked up to the victim and grabbed her by the shoulders aggressively, before dragging her out.
The defendant then kicked the door of the shop, smashing a glass panel.
The prosecution said police believed the victim had been involved in a domestic violence relationship for a period of time.
They also indicated Davis was on a suspended sentence bond for assaulting police.
The defendant’s lawyer said his client had mental health issues and struggled with controlling his anger.
Magistrate Teresa Anderson ordered a home detention bail report and a bail enquiry report to find out about Davis’ response to supervision.
The matter was adjourned for a short period to allow those reports to be returned to the court.
Davis was remanded in custody.
