Girls Day In supports cancer support group

DAY IN: The annual Girls Day In at the Somerset Hotel in Millicent on Saturday was organised by the Millicent Cancer Support Group and attended by 112 partygoers including Emory Harris, Tess Dunsford, Kate Wheal and Rose Slape. THE switch from a Girls Night Out to a Girls Day In has paid both financial and social dividends for the Millicent Cancer Support Group.

Formerly a night time event, the dining room of the Somerset Hotel in Millicent was filled at lunchtime on Saturday with 112 women who came together to support a dedicated charitable group.

Organisers were rewarded with a fundraising tally in excess of $5000 generated by ticket sales, raffles and an auction.

Support group vice president Karla Werchon said Girls Night Outs are held across the nation each October but the time did not suit the Millicent branch.

“October is a bit of a crazy month in Millicent with basketball tournaments and so on,” Karla said.

“Everyone is so busy.

“We were after having a more casual and relaxing time on Saturday and the ladies were able to have a catch-up.

“The food was beautiful and the function was awesome.

“We are grateful to Millicent stock agent John Chay for conducting the charity auction.

“The business houses of Millicent are fantastic for supporting us with 12 delightful goods for the auction and their support is appreciated.”

Over the years, the group has donated essential items to the Millicent and Mount Gambier hospitals as well as made donations for cancer research.

Karla said the proceeds from Saturday’s Girls Day In would probably go to research through the Cancer Council.

“There are so many types of cancer and the Cancer Council researches them all.

“At present, the State Government subsidises research by a ratio of four-to-one.

“For every $1000 we donate, it becomes $5000”.
