MOUNT Gambier councillors will deliberate an alternative shelter over the Mount Gambier Bowls Club after a sub-committee rejected the proposed 1560m2 Colorbond canopy.
At Tuesday’s Operational Standing Committee meeting, elected members supported the construction of a dome-like shade structure over the club’s B Green ahead of the existing proposal.
The club’s original design, which was 39 by 40 metres, six metres high and included a rendered stall feature wall and fabric roll up curtains, was rejected by councillors at the January meeting.
In a deputation to the operational committee, Mount Gambier Bowls Club secretary Peter Clark presented two alternative designs for the green cover, including a PVC “Greenline” structure.
Mr Clark said the Greenline structure was costed at $800,000 – more than $300,000 above the club’s original design.
“The issue for us now is if we were to go with the PVC, it would be $800,000 or $900,000 for the metal,” he said.
“We can build our proposed design for $500,000.
“We can afford that.”
Mr Clark said the club’s current proposal would be funded through a $100,000 State Government grant, a $200,000 benefactor contribution and other savings.
He said council would need to provide funds to the project in the event an alternative design was agreed on.
“From our club’s point of view, we are happy with the metal building,” Mr Clark said.
“But it is up to you.
“What we have tried to do is to discuss with council what they would like to see.”
Following the presentation, councillors flagged the PVC dome-like design as their preferred choice.
While acknowledging the potential extra cost, Mount Gambier Mayor Lynette Martin and councillor Steve Perryman said council’s responsibility was to maintain the area’s aesthetic.
The proposal will be discussed at council’s general meeting tomorrow night.
