Driver’s license goes up in smoke

A MOUNT Gambier man has lost his licence and received significant fines for performing a burnout in his street while intoxicated.

Jack Dylan Nicholls, 28, appeared in the Mount Gambier Magistrates Court on range of traffic offences.

The prosecution said a witness saw the defendant doing large burnouts for around 15 minutes.

Witnesses reported seeing flames coming from the rear tyres.

Following reports of the incident, police attended the location and noticed a large amount of burned rubber smoking on the road.

When police spoke to the defendant, he denied any involvement.

He was submitted to a breath analysis test, however failed to produce an adequate sample.

Nicholls was charged with failing to comply with a breath test.

The defendant’s lawyer said Nicholls had consumed a large quantity of alcohol between the burnouts and when the police arrived.

“He understands he will receive a lengthy term of disqualification because of his non-compliance,” she said.

Magistrate Teresa Anderson fined the defendant a total of $1600 and ordered him to pay impounding costs of $1039.40.

She also disqualified him from driving for nine months and 21 days.
