THE proud owners of Lowan House at Kalangadoo and the Royal Flying Doctor Service Mount Gambier Support Group members have collectively raised a staggering $22,000 for the crucial medical evacuation organisation.

The event was the most successful fundraiser ever held by the support group with more than 2500 people flocking to the magnificent homestead and its spectacular garden over two days.

The event coincided with the 150th anniversary of Lowan House, which was opened to the public to raise money for the “flying doctor”.

The delighted owners of Lowan House, Gary and Wendy Kilsby along with daughter Jane recently presented more than $22,000 to support group president Bill Russon.

“It was the biggest and most successful community event arranged for the RFDS and was a tribute to the owners and particularly Jane, who meticulously planned the event to be inclusive of all ages,” Mr Russon said.

There were historical displays of the property and Kalangadoo railways, local artisans, food and wine stalls with local produce, displays of vintage cars and musicians playing on the lawns.

High tea was served on the veranda and tours of the home were “very popular”.

“The home had never before been opened to the public,” Mr Russon said.

The Glencoe Kindergarten organised a range of children’s activities, including Shetland pony rides, an animal nursery, giant games and face painting and this was popular with the children.

The event also attracted visitors from Adelaide and descendants of the original builder and owner, William Crouch, including former Adelaide Mayor Martin Haese and Judy Gribble, who has written a history of Lowan House.

“It was a colourful and successful day raising a significant amount for the RFDS, which serves the communities of the South East with an average of two medical evacuations each day,” Mr Russon said.

“The Kilsby family must be congratulated for organising an amazing event and for raising such a wonderful amount for the Royal Flying Doctor Service.”
