Outreach initiative supports at-risk individuals

ACTION CARD: Limestone Coast Family Violence Action Group chair Sonya Mezinec and Tanya Reddie of Tanya’s Hairworks with the recently released family safety card.

A NEW wallet-sized card with names and phone numbers of crisis and outreach services for at-risk individuals is being rolled out across the Limestone Coast.

The card lists more than 30 local and emergency services and their contact details, including domestic violence and mental health centres, hotlines and counselling and legal services.

The small card was produced by the Limestone Coast Family Violence Action Group with financial support from the Stand Like Stone Foundation.

Limestone Coast Family Violence Action Group chair Sonya Mezinec said the card aimed to provide people, including those at risk of domestic and family violence, region specific contact information.

“Often people at risk may not be connected to services and may not know where to go for assistance,” she said.

“However they may be connected to services such as hairdressers, chemists, real estate agents and accountants.

“Possibly these service providers may notice there is an issue, but do not know where to direct the client.

“Services can now discreetly provide this card so people can find the help they need.”

Tanya’s Hairworks owner Tanya Reddie said the card would be useful to hairdressers whose clients confide in them.

“As a hairdresser, we often see clients in who might be in difficult situations,” she said.

“We want to help, but knowing where to go is hard and not always easy to find.

“This card is great because it lists all the services that are available in one place, so we can direct people to services.”

Organisations interested in distributing the cards are encouraged to contact Ms Mezinec at southeast@victimsa.org or on 8723 2968.
