Merrett brothers join in charity event family tradition

FAMILY TIES: Brothers Cameron and Mark Merrett will take part in this year’s Aussie Muscle Car Run after a long family tradition.

THE Merrett muscle car dynasty continues with Mark and Cameron taking part in their first Aussie Muscle Car Run this year.

The boys will hit the road in their VC Holden Commodore on October 27 to raise funds for the Leukaemia Foundation alongside their father and grandfather, Pork and Snow, in addition to two other South East teams.

Six years of lively stories finally convinced the pair to join in this year’s run and the Penola Peanuts soon started fundraising.

“We have grown up around cars and after seeing those two (Pork and Snow) take part every year we thought we better get on board,” Mark said.

“It’s exciting to be following on with the tradition and I think it will be a great bonding experience for the four of us once we hit the road.”

One of the best memories Pork and Snow have from the run is their time spent with Australian comedian Shane Jacobson.

Mark said the parties and wild tales is something he is really looking forward to.

“It will be great to meet people like that and just kick back with them as if we’re good mates,” he said.

“The cause is really important and it’s great to have people like Shane taking part.

“Hopefully we get to meet him and we’ll have our own stories to bring back home after the event.”

The muscle cars are another aspect of the event the young team is looking forward to.

“It will be really cool to see what everyone else is driving,” Mark said.

“Our family are obviously pretty big into cars so it’s definitely something I’m excited about.”

Although the team has a wealth of knowledge behind them, they have been left to their own devices when it comes to fundraising.

“We have kind of just let them do their own thing,” Pork said.

“It’s been up to them how they raise the money and they have had to do it all themselves.

“I’m pretty proud of not only the money they have been raising but just the fact they’re getting into the spirit and doing something for such a great cause.”

With a modest goal of $4000, the team has already raised more than $6000 with plenty of time left on the clock.

“I do not think we’ll raise the most but it will be nice to give whatever we can to the cause,” Mark said.
