Bike crash investigation

MOUNT Gambier Police officers are expected to interview a 27-year-old Mount Gambier motorcyclist who spectacularly crashed at the city’s main corner yesterday.

In front of a string of witnesses, the motorbike rider allegedly ran through a red light, hit a vehicle and then crashed outside the Main Corner complex.

It is understood the trail bike was stolen from a shed at Port MacDonnell earlier that morning with police receiving numerous calls from the public warning of the motorbike rider’s erratic behaviour.

In a bizarre trail of events, the man was not wearing a motorbike helmet and was seen travelling at “high speeds” along Jubilee Highway and Pick Avenue.

The accident, which occurred around 11.30am at the junction of Penola Road and Commercial Street, resulted in dozens of cars being banked up for some blocks.

Limestone Coast Police Senior Sergeant Chris King said police were hoping to speak with the motorcyclist after he received medical treatment at Mount Gambier Hospital.

He said the injuries sustained to the man were not considered life-threatening.

While investigations were ongoing, Snr Sgt King said it appeared the motorcyclist was travelling on Penola Road when the accident occurred.

“The motorcyclist was travelling south and disobeyed a traffic signal,” he said.

He said the bike was allegedly stolen from a property on Smiths Road at Port MacDonnell yesterday morning.

Police, SA Ambulance and Metropolitan Fire Service personnel attended the scene.

The motorbike rider was conveyed to hospital in an ambulance.

The incident sparked numerous comments on social media with some motorists expressing their disbelief the man was driving at high speeds around the city without a helmet.
