Students join Lions to keep school grounds in check

HELPING HAND: Mary MacKillop Memorial School students Olivia, Tess and Heidi help to keep the school’s grounds looking tidy as part of the school based Leo Club program.

MARY MacKillop Memorial School students have been busy exploring diverse ways to keep their school grounds tidy as part of regular school-based Leo Club meetings.

Year seven students, together with the Penola Lions Club, have established a service club with a focus on the school’s yard.

The club meets with Year 6/7 students every three weeks in an effort to build relationships.

Projects have included renovating the school’s butterfly garden, the herb garden and maintaining the existing gardens.

“The students are very engaged and heavily involved, at our first meeting – 15 students put their hands up to be president,” school-based Leo’s Club coordinator Jenny Hinze said.

The club is part of the student’s curriculum, with Ms Hinze saying it had been well supported by principal Maureen Hanrahan and teacher Jenny Herbert.

“Through this program, students are able to develop a taste for what being in a Leo or Lions Club after primary school would be like,” Ms Hinze said.

“It is a fantastic opportunity to expose more families to the work of the community club.”
